Decisional issues for Human-Robot Joint Action – Rachid Alami (LAAS-CNRS)
This talk will address some key decisional issues that are necessary for a cognitive and interactive robot which shares space and tasks with humans. We adopt a constructive approach based on the identification and the effective implementation of individual and collaborative skills. The system is comprehensive since it aims at dealing with a complete set of abilities articulated so that the robot controller is effectively able to conduct in a flexible and fluent manner a human-robot joint action seen as a collaborative problem solving and task achievement. These abilities include geometric reasoning and situation assessment based essentially on perspective-taking and affordances, management and exploitation of each agent (human and robot) knowledge in a separate cognitive model, human-aware task planning and interleaved execution of shared plans. We will also discuss the key issues linked to the pertinence and the acceptability by the human of the robot behaviour, and how this influence qualitatively the robot decisional, planning, control and communication processes.
Project to Promote the Development of Robotic Devices for Nursing Care Aims to Solve Japan’s Aging Population Problem – Yoshihiro Nakabo (National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology)
Japan’s declining birthrate and aging population are resulting in an increase in the number of people being cared for and a shortage of caregivers, which is now becoming a serious problem. The AMED Project for Robotic Devices for Nursing Care, funded by Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), is a continuation of several projects that have been implemented over the past 10 years. This project is unique in that it has always been implemented in parallel with a development assistance project to promote the development of 13 key areas of robotic devices for nursing care in eight priority fields, as determined by the MHLW and METI, and an environmental improvement project to formulate safety standards and verify the effectiveness of these devices. This presentation will provide an overview of the efforts that have been made to date and introduce successful examples of the robotic nursing care devices among the number of trials of the developed devices, as well as the efforts being made to expand their use overseas.
