Behavioral characteristics of older people under COVID-19 pandemic; a 3-year longitudinal study – Yasuyuki Gondo (Osaka University)
Under the COVID-19 pandemic, all people have been exposed to immediate risk for infection of the virus and indirect risk to a new normal lifestyle. Both risks would cause a short time and long-term influences on health and well-being. Older people are believed to be highly influenced by those risks. For the short-term risk, that’ is true, as indicated by the mortality ratio. For the long-term risk, inactivity leads to health and mental condition decline were strongly warned. For example, The Japan Geriatrics Society released a poster worming the second effect of self-restraint as a cause of future frailty in March 2020. In this presentation, we report a behavioral change in older adults to clarify whether our understanding of the older people as a “vulnerable Population” is proper. We used the SONIC study 70 years old cohort data collected in 2019, 2020(summer), 2021(winter), 2022(summer), and 2023(winter). The results showed the resilience of older people under the hazard circumstance. This finding shed light not only on the vulnerability but on the strength of older people and would be suggestive to discuss the INNOVCARE system.
