Seminar “Mediating Plurality of Aging” – EHESS x Heidelberg x Kyoto

EHESS x Heidelberg x Kyoto Trilateral Project A Kick-off

EHESS will start a trilateral project with Heidelberg University and Kyoto University on the theme of ‘aging’. The kick-off seminar for this project, ‘Connecting the Plurality of “Aging”’, will be held in Kyoto as follows.

Aging is a universal human phenomenon but the concept and understanding of its actuality differ greatly among academic disciplines; it is both singular and plural. The changes due to the development of advanced medical technologies, and social challenges and the issues of political economy related to Aging, are now so prominent that an integrated understanding of Aging is required. However, the cross-disciplinary discussion that will enable such an understanding has not yet matured.

This international seminar among EHESS, Heidelberg University, and Kyoto University will focus on the concept of “mediation” as the link between the singular and the plural, or between the plurals and aim at “dialogue as mediation”, a laborious, yet productive and creative process of translation when transferring the specific disciplinary knowledge to another. While sharing expertise on “aging” as a biological aspect of human life (medicine and biology), aging in human life (philosophy), and aging in the society (social science), the seminar will consider what “aging” means to humans by crossing the boundaries.
